Selecting Exhaust Extraction System Hoses

The most important part when designing a vehicle exhaust system is the selection of the hose that will be used. There are several decisions that need to be made to guarantee you and your customer are satisfied with the final outcome. That’s why, at Monoxivent, we have so many options available.

Capturing Welding Fumes or Vehicle Exhaust Capture, what is the difference?

While there are several hoses that can be used for either, choosing the right hose generally depends on the application. Often the hoses for a weld exhaust are utilized on a source capture arm. So, it will be suspended in the air permanently.

As for a vehicle exhaust hose, these typically are placed overhead or stored underground. You should always keep that in mind considering if the hose requires an external wear strip or a maybe even the ability to be “crushed” like our Series 3000 Hose.

Monoxivent does not recommend mixing usage between welding fume capture and vehicle exhaust. These two systems should not be used for serving the same purpose.

What factors should I consider when selecting Source Capture Hoses?

For capturing welding fumes typically, you want something that is light weight and can be fastened to a fume arm. Temperature usually is not a factor, however for grinding applications you may need to include a stainless-steel interior liner. Monoxivent Series 6000 or Series 5000 hoses work well for welding fume capture.

For vehicle exhaust capture temperature is the most important factor along with proper air volume. Diesel Exhaust Fume temperatures can range from 600 degree up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Our standard 4000 series hose can handle temperatures of 600 degree continuously and up to 1250 degrees intermittently. The Series 7000 hoses range from 350 degrees up to 2010 degrees Fahrenheit.

Determining the length of your Source Capture Hose

You can use the Pythagorean Theorem to decide what length of hose you need for your overhead vehicle exhaust system. If a and b are the lengths of the legs of a right triangle and c is the length of the hypotenuse, then the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse.

This relationship is represented by the formula: a² +b² = c²

Measure the mounting height of the vehicle exhaust hose reel to the floor. Then in a straight line from the floor under the hose reel measure the maximum distance you want to reach.

For example, 14 feet mounting height (A) and 8 feet of horizonal distance (B) works out in the following equation:

14² + 8² = 260 & The square root of 260 = 16.13 feet.

So for this example we would recommend a hose that is a minimum of 20 feet in length.
